We are the Jehouligans and we make the best out of the worst.

A life full of structure is hard on us. Getting out of bed on a set time, the school run, bedtime, homework; organised life in whole, it just doesn't come natural to us.
Coming home from holiday is always hard on us. Don't get me wrong ... we aren't lazy. Not at all! One lazy day on the beach is more than enough! We are all about exploring and learning ... yet trying to stick to a fixed program just doesn't come natural to us.
We live on the border of a big, beautiful swap with walking trails all over. After a five minute bike ride we arrive in a forest with endless mountainbike trails and little ponds and streams. It may not be as mindblowing as an Islandic waterfall or a Moroccan desert. But it is on our doorstep, free and perfect for an early evening activity.
If you have the same problem; don't think you will see the big problem-solving light in this post. I just want to show you how we make the best out of structured life.
I still remember Aurélie starting school. I was trying to keep up with everything everybody said was important! And it just wore me out.
As I got older I learned that every family is different and each type of family can raise a happy and healthy child, so I decided to it my way.
Offcourse we still have to get up on time, do homework and chores, but I try to keep school and education as basic as possible. They go to school, I help them with their homework, but we do not engage in a whole series of after-school activities. Aurélie dances and does a course in digital art because she wants to make websites and do digital artwork. Ellis rides horses and takes an artclass.
We do appreciate a good education but we feel through our travels and planning our kids learn so much already.
Weekends are free. Our girls each get to choose 2 after-school activities, but none of them during the weekends.
I also try to group their activities in 2 days, so during the week we still have 3 days we can enjoy ourselves. And we do!
Each area has his own pearls, discover yours and make the best of them! So do we.

Even when we stay in we search for ways to expand our horizon. We try new dishes and cook together and we eat as a family.
Together with Ellis I'm learning some Arabic. And of course we think about next destinations.
Even while making the best of our weeks we are still happy when the weekend arrives. Weekends we use for exploring: near by and far away. We are happy to have friends where we can go and stay with: to spend time with them and explore the area. Sometimes we go to a hotel or we go camping, but often we explore our own beautiful surroundings.
