Quarry divers have known it for a long time: Belgium is full of little gems for exciting dives down to a good 50 metres.
But in this year when we are all doing staycations, most people would like to see something other than Ostend for the umpteenth time. The north of Hainaut offers peace and quiet and an atmosphere that will instantly put you in a holiday mood.
The gorgeous deep blue colours of the quarries immediately transport us to the gorges of Provence. But Hainaut has much more to offer than just its quarries …

Pairi Daiza
The showpiece of Belgian zoos. You wander through various beautiful gardens that evoke faraway lands. For a truly unique experience you can even spend the night in the zoo in one of their exclusive lodges. Pairi Daiza is also known for its delicious dinners.

The quarries of Lessines
Although they are closed to the public, there are still ways to visit these little gems. One is to go through a recognised diving club, as they regularly get access; the other is via a known guide, for example https://www.actionnature.be/. Then there is also one less legal route through the hole in the fence on the Chemin de Mons a Gand; the risks and any fine are of course your own responsibility.
The St-Feuillien brewery
During a weekend away with our Walloon friends, a good beer certainly cannot be missing. The St-Feuillien brewery offers guided visits and cheese and beer tastings. Best to book in advance via their website. http://www.st-feuillien.com/
Château d’Attre
It may not be Versailles, but it is just as unique, not overcrowded and beautifully maintained. You can choose a ticket for the castle, the garden or both. http://attre.be/

The cement quarries of Obourg
Less dramatic than the quarries of Lessines, but located in a beautiful nature reserve and free to visit. Booking a guided tour via https://www.msvt.be/ is recommended
Hospital of Notre-Dame à la Rose
A former convent and hospital. Today it is a museum with many original items and multilingual guided tours. You can also eat wonderfully there.
Boating on the waterways
Hainaut also has beautiful waterways with many marinas. There are also several boat lifts to bridge the difference in height of the Hainaut plateau. You probably still remember the ‘Ronquières inclined plane’ from your geography lessons as one of them. Book your favourite cruise at one of the many little harbours. http://www.peronnesyachtclub.be
Parc d’Enghien
